The Smart House

The house's smart-home hub, plus dashboards that tell us when something is quietly going wrong.

Lights, climate and the other everyday bits of the house run through Home Assistant. This fall we moved it onto its own small, dedicated machine with nightly backups, cleaned out years of clutter, and added a proper set of graphs and alerts. Now a short digest arrives each morning, and once a week the house assistant reads the trends and tells us what's getting worse before it breaks.

The house now has the kind of monitoring a small office would be proud of, which is either sensible or a little much, depending on who you ask.

Highlights

  • A move to dedicated hardware with about an hour of downtime and a tested way back
  • Dashboards for energy, climate, network and system health
  • A daily digest and a weekly written review, instead of staring at graphs
  • Every change written down in a dated changelog
  • A 3D model of the house in progress, for a dashboard you can walk around
